SkyFOX is live over a protest of the Frank Rizzo statue in Center City.
The protest began shortly before 5 p.m. Monday.
The statue, which is located at 1401 JFK Boulevard, has been the center of renewed talks of removal in the wake of the events in Charlottesville, Virginia. Rizzo, the tough talking former cop from South Philly, has long been criticized for his volatile relationships with African Americans and LGBT communities.
Last week, one man was arrested for allegedly throwing eggs at the statue. That suspect has been charged with disorderly conduct.
Late Thursday night, the Frank Rizzo statue was defaced with white spray paint that read 'black power'. FOX 29 cameras caught the vandalism and immediately called police. Authorities say 40-year-old Wali Rahman has been charged with criminal mischief, institutional vandalism and desecrating objects.
Rizzo statue supporters showed up last Friday morning and placed a black sheet over the graffiti. One woman was emotional when speaking to FOX 29 about the overnight vandalism.
"I was just really upset that somebody would take the time out to do hatred like they just did," supporter Debbie said.
This is a developing story, please stay with FOX 29 for updates.
