Tim Duncan helps deliver over 170,000 pounds of food to US Virgin Islands

Tim Duncan was known for his quiet perfection on the basketball court. But good players, even the quiet ones, know when to speak up.

And when it comes to his home island of St. Croix and the devastation wrought by Hurricane Irma, there's nothing quiet about this Hall of Famer.

In a story on The Players Tribune, Duncan wrote his plea to help rebuild the U.S. Virgin Islands. He recalled the fear he had as a 13-year-old during Hurricane Hugo in 1989, and how he saw firsthand how important immediate and sustained help is.

Duncan immediately pledged $250,000 and announced his intention to match the first $1 million donated to his Virgin Island Relief Fund.

As reported by SB Nation, Duncan recently held a press conference with New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg to remind Americans that the Virgin Islands are part of the United States. He urged them to do everything possible to help.

So far, his relief effort has raised close to $3 million. But if there's one thing the five-time NBA champion knows about success, it's that it takes teamwork. According to his relief fund's Twitter account, he and his team have already provided 170,000 pounds of food and over 1,200 pounds of medical supplies.

By the looks of it, Duncan is on a winning team once again. Watch the video to see how the Hall of Famer is helping his home island.
