CMPD launches 'gun safety program' intended to reduce gun thefts

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced on Wednesday they've launched a gun safety program intended to reduce the number of reported gun thefts.

According to CMPD, more than 1,700 guns have been reported stolen from lawful gun owners who left them in vehicles since 2014. They said more than 360 guns have been reported stolen from vehicles so far this year alone.

CMPD said they've secured 100 vehicle gun safes that the department will distribute to community members who lawfully own a gun. Residents may obtain a safe at CMPD headquarters property window after displaying identification.

Additionally, Hyatt Gun Shop will be offering vehicle gun safes to community members at cost, approximately $23.00 a safe.

"Owning a gun comes with responsibility and a big part of it involves safeguarding the weapon," CMPD said in a written release.

CMPD continues to urge the community to lock their vehicles and remove items, especially guns.
