J.J. Watt raises over $37 million for Harvey relief

J.J. Watt is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the Houston Texans. And while his play on the field is impressive, his recent fundraising for the city he loves is truly awe-inspiring.

Watt started a fundraising campaign on to raise money for victims of Hurricane Harvey on August 26. The initial goal was $200,000, but just like the players he leads on the field, people were quick to step up for Watt.

According to Sports Illustrated, instead of getting $200,000. he had over 200,000 donors!

When the fundraising came to an end on September 15, over $37 million had been raised. The page shows the final tally at $37,131,817.

"There are not enough words to thank you all for your generosity. If there is one thing that I have taken away from these last few weeks, it is the reassurance of how much good is out there in our world. When times are the toughest, humanity stands at its strongest and you have all helped to prove that emphatically," Watt wrote on the fund's website. "Please keep this spirit of helping one another alive. The world is a better place when we all take care of each other."

There were extremely generous contributions including a $5 million donation from billionaire Charles Butt and a $1 million donation from Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show. However, according to USA Today, most of the donations were less than $100 apiece.
