Northeastern mountains kicked off the week with another snowstorm. For some it was around a half foot. For others it was nearly two feet. Virtually all Northeastern mountains rely on snowmaking to cover the majority of their terrain and most slopes were fully covered before this parade of snowstorms kicked in a few weeks ago. This storm improves the variety of terrain and especially improves the experience for the advanced skier. Anyone who has the skills to take on steep ungroomed natural trails or negotiate the trees by skiing glades or have a workout in the bumps on mogul trails have deep soft bottomless snow on a wide variety of natural terrain. Sunday River, Maine; Bretton Woods, New Hampshire and Northern Vermont mountains like Jay Peak, Smugglers' Notch, Stowe and Sugarbush are known for their natural steeps and gladed trails. Northeastern resorts picked up 3 to 6 feet of snow over the last 3 weeks with the most landing on Wachusett and Nashoba Valley in Massachusetts.

It is a weekend to dress very warm with a wool or synthetic, technical base layer. A gator is necessary or any good form of face protection and hand and toe warmers will come in handy. Killington, VT has two gondolas for a protected ride to their summit. Stowe and Stratton have gondolas too and so do Gore and Whiteface, NY and Loon, NH. Okemo and Mount Snow have bubble six pack chairs. Jay Peak, VT and Cannon NH both ride ariel trams.

Ski areas through New York, and CT and the Berkshires all got snow this week including Windham in the Catskills and Butternut, MA. Jack Frost, PA is 100% and Wisp, MD is close to it. Both also have big snow tubing parks. Make reservations for snow tubing during the busy Presidents weekend. Midwestern ski areas continue to maintain prime conditions with a deep base of packed powder and occasional snowfalls. Ski all trails at Boyne Mountain and learn how to ride fat tire bikes on snowy trails at a clinic this Saturday.

Crested Butte and Arapahoe Basin, Colorado continue to get tagged with fresh snowfalls from time to time to maintain that soft powdery feel on the slopes. Crested Butte has a large selection of groomed cruising runs in every ability level. Snowbird picked up around a half foot of fresh snow this week in Utah and had some powder days for those who hit the slopes early. They wrap up the week skiing in mild temperatures and sunshine with another shot of fresh snow early next week. Wyoming ski areas like Grand Targhee and Jackson Hole got more snow this week and continue to be among the best in the U.S. for fresh snow this winter.

Sugar Bowl rebounded nicely in California's Lake Tahoe region with two feet of fresh snow at their summit over the weekend. They're back to mild sunshine and looking to have all slopes open for the weekend. Mount Bachelor, Oregon is back to soft packed powder and Sun Valley, Idaho picked up 7 inches of snow this week.
