Memorial Day Hotspots: Three Locales Expecting Mild Weather

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start to the summer, and weather plays an important role in where people decide to kick off the season.

The weather will cooperate for many major holiday weekend events. Some locations are highlighted below.

    Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The weather should be calm for Myrtle Beach, where many Memorial Day activities are occurring.

“We’ve been very fortunate with the Memorial Day weekend weather. We had a warm winter and a cool spring here, so I think we’re looking forward to some summerlike temperatures for a change,” said Mark Kruea, public information officer for the city of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Myrtle Beach is expected to have a partly to mostly sunny sky for Saturday and Sunday with daytime highs on Saturday and Sunday around 74, with low temperatures around 54, according to AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Dan Kottlowski.

“Memorial Day looks mostly sunny with a high temperature around 70, after a morning low of 58,” added Kottlowski.

Kottlowski said the water temperature will be between 68 and 70, which is slightly below average. Kruea adds that by late May the ocean is warm enough to be comfortable for all; the beaches are full and everyone is out enjoying the sunshine.

Memorial Day is a day for families and friends to spend time together. It is also a day to honor the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, which is why Kruea and the city of Myrtle Beach host ‘Military Appreciation Days.’

“Military Appreciation Days has the broadest support and reach. We’ve had veterans of every service involved, from every part of the Grand Strand. It’s not just a Myrtle Beach thing,” said Kruea. “As a community, we’re coming together to show our appreciation to these men and women,” added Kruea.

During the parade and Memorial Day service this year, they are recognizing a local veteran from each of the major wars. Rocky Bleier, U.S. Army veteran and former Pittsburgh Steelers running back, is this year’s Grand Marshal for its Memorial Day parade.

    South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

South Lake Tahoe, Calif., offers a lake-view gondola ride, with plenty of indoor and outdoor recreation.

“The ‘Heavenly Gondola’ whisks you to the top of the mountain for spectacular views of the lake and for hiking.  A drive around the lake with a lake-view lunch stop is a must,” said Executive Director for the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority Carol Chaplin.

Chaplin says the marinas are gearing up for Memorial Day weekend with rental boats, wave runners, kayaks and paddle-boards.

Indoor activities include gaming, clubbing, shopping, family activities and spa experiences.

“It is generally dry with some sunshine with high temperatures around 60 and lows in the lower 30s,” says AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Ken Clark.

According to Clark, although rain is not likely, there have been times with a shower or thundershower over the holiday weekend.

Chaplin says to be sure to pack a sweater and some jeans, but don't forget the sunscreen and the swimsuit.

    Chincoteague, Va.

Chincoteague, Va., has water temperatures that are slightly above normal for the holiday weekend. “One of my favorite vacations spots, Chincoteague, Va., will have a water temperature of 62 to 64 degrees,” said Kottlowski.

“Weather-wise, we are expecting a cold front to move through this area just before the holiday weekend. So, cooler and drier [conditions] with a brisk northwest wind will be the rule for the first part of the holiday weekend with a mix of clouds and sunshine,” added Kottlowski.

Executive Director for the Chincoteague Chamber Suzanne Taylor said Memorial Day weekend weather has been nice in previous years.

“The best part about visiting Chincoteague this time of the year is an opportunity to be outdoors and enjoy all that we offer -- beach, hiking, biking, eco tours, fishing, or just relaxing,” said Taylor.

According to Kottlowski, daytime highs will be in the mid-60s on Saturday and Sunday, while nighttime lows will be in the low 50s. Memorial Day will be sunny with less wind and a high of 70.
