Honor Recognizes Ongoing Contributions to Meteorology of AccuWeather Founder and President

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. January 27, 2011 - AccuWeather.com, the world's leading weather information source, today announces the election of its Founder and President, Joel N. Myers, as a Fellow of The American Meteorological Society (AMS). Only two-tenths of one percent of the total 14,000+ AMS membership is approved through the Fellow nomination process each year. The formal announcement of Dr. Myers' Fellow election was made at the AMS' 91st Annual Meeting this week at The Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Wash.

"I am honored to be elected as a Fellow of The American Meteorological Society," said Dr. Myers. "Weather and weather forecasting have been my passions since I was very young. The need for accurate and timely weather information through all media platforms is felt by government, business, and consumers alike. It is personally satisfying knowing that AccuWeather meets this need every day." Dr. Myers founded AccuWeather in 1962 while he was a Pennsylvania State University graduate student in meteorology. Today, AccuWeather is a recognized, global, weather information company serving tens of millions of customers each day through the Internet, mobile devices, broadcast television, radio, and in print. AccuWeather employs almost 400 people including 113 meteorologists.

"Dr. Myers is a pioneer in our field and I am very pleased to see his election to Fellow," said Keith Seitter, Executive Director of AMS. "The honor of Fellow is given to an individual for recognition of outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences, or their applications, during a substantial period of years. Dr. Myers continues to be a leader who is committed to the advancement of our field."

During the early days of AccuWeather, Dr. Myers not only managed the new company and forecasted weather, but also remained an active member of the Penn State faculty. At the time of his retirement from teaching at Penn State, it was estimated that Dr. Myers had taught forecasting skills to 17 percent of all of the country's practicing meteorologists. He continues to serve education today as a member of the Penn State Board of Trustees, to which he has been elected for ten consecutive three-year terms.

Dr. Myers has received numerous awards throughout his career, including named as one of the top 528 entrepreneurs in American history by Entrepreneur magazine's Encyclopedia of Entrepreneurs, the National Weather Association's Operational Achievement Individual Award, Ernst & Young's Western Pennsylvania Entrepreneur of the Year Award - Business Services, and the Theodor Herzl Award of the Jerusalem Fund of Aish HaTorah. In 2009, AccuWeather, the company he founded and leads, received the Corporate Award from the AMS for "nearly 50 years of exceptional innovation and leadership in weather applications and communication."
