Sample - AccuWeather National Summary:
ACCUWEATHER SUMMARY 9 A.M. EASTERN JANUARY 6, 1998
NATIONAL SUMMARY
--High pressure off the Carolina coast continued to pump unseasonably
warm, moist air northward from the Gulf of Mexico yesterday. While 70s
were common along the Gulf Coast states, temperatures as far north as
Ohio and Indiana topped out in the 50s and low 60s, more than 20
degrees above typical January levels. Temperatures this morning are
still in the 50s across this region with plenty of clouds, areas of
fog and drizzle and some showers in spots.
--The leading edge of this warm air produced rain and drizzle over
parts of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota and in sections of New
York and northern New England Sunday night and Monday. In some of
these northern sections, where temperatures lingered below freezing,
the precipitation froze on surfaces producing an accumulation of ice
and slippery roadways. A low pressure area tracking along this front
is bringing an area of steadier precipitation from northern
Pennsylvania northward into southeastern Ontario and northeastward
into northern New England this morning.
--The combination of a storm system edging toward the Mississippi
Valley and the high pressure off the Southeast coast pumping in
moisture provided rain and even a couple of heavier thunderstorms
Monday and Monday night over the Gulf Coast region. Some of the
rainfall has been quite heavy, locally exceeding 2 inches.
--Another storm system produced snow along the spine of the Rockies
yesterday, while showers of snow and rain lingered in the Northwest.
California remained dry.
A LOOK AT THE NATIONAL WEATHER MAP
A storm (29.91) just east of Michigan had a warm front that extended
southeast through northern New Jersey where it then became a cold
front as it continued eastward over the ocean. A stationary front
extended southwestward from this storm to a storm (29.85) in eastern
Oklahoma, from which a cold front continued across eastern Texas. A
storm (29.86) in southern Saskatchewan had a warm front across
central North Dakota while a cold front stretched away to its
northeast. This cold front became a warm front in southeastern
British Columbia that was associated with a storm (29.77) along the
Canadian coast. A high pressure center (30.24) was located in western
Utah.
SPECIAL WEATHER
A rare string of warm days at Chicago...
Chicago, Illinois, enjoyed the 4th day of a January heat wave.
Monday was the 4th day in a row that the temperature at O'Hare
Airport reached 50 degrees or higher. Looking back over 125 years of
records, this has occurred only 6 other times during the month of
January. It happened twice in 1880 on the 6th through the 9th and
again from the 16th through 19th. Altogether, January 1880 had a
remarkable 13 days in the 50s. 1880 ended up being the warmest
January on record by far. The average for January 1880 was 39.8
degrees, or about 19 degrees above the normal of 21.0 degrees. Other
Januarys with 4 straight days of 50 or higher were 1909, 1916, 1944
and 1967. January 1967 had a record 5 straight days of 50 degrees or
higher from the 21st through the 25th. This was followed by the citys
biggest snowstorm (23 inches) on the 26th and 27th of the month.
