Hurricane Felix, the second Category 5 hurricane of the 2007 Atlantic Basin season, formed as a tropical wave on August 31, 2007. On the evening of September 1, Felix reached Category 1 strength in the eastern Caribbean. The next day, Felix rapidly developed into a major hurricane, and reached Category 5 strength by the evening of September 3.
Felix made landfall along the Miskito Coast of Nicaragua at 8 a.m. EDT on September 4, with winds of 165 mph. The storm quickly lost strength as it moved across Central America; however, at least 133 deaths have been blamed on the storm.
Felix and Hurricane Dean marked the first time two Category 5 hurricanes had made landfall in the same season.
