Tropical Depression Triggers Rare Desert Rain

Tropical Depression "Three" (03B) skirted the Horn of Africa on late Tuesday into Wednesday following a short stint as a weak tropical cyclone. The weather system tracked near the island of Socotra as it pelted far northeastern Somalia with local flooding rain. As of Wednesday, the tropical depression wheeled northwest over the eastern Gulf of Aden bound for southern Arabia. The leading edge of its tropical moisture was already spreading ashore over Oman and Yemen, where it was spawning scattered downpours. At Salalah, in southwestern Oman, rainfall was 1 inch as of Wednesday.

Looking ahead, Tropical Depression 03B will send tropical moisture well inland over southern Arabia along with and following its landfall over eastern Yemen.
