The snow storm that has dumped
over a foot of snow across parts of the northern
Rockies will finally pull
away from the region tonight, allowing heavy snow to taper off.
More heavy snow will develop across these same areas by Wednesday night, however, as a
cold front plunges southward from Canada.
Through tonight, snow will continue falling across parts of
eastern Idaho,
southern Montana,
northern Wyoming,
southwestern North Dakota and
northwestern South Dakota.
If they haven't already, totals will reach between 6 and 12 inches across a large portion of
southern Montana and
northern Wyoming, causing more power and phone outages in addition to
treacherous travel conditions.
Areas like
Missoula, Mont., had already experienced power and
phone outages by Monday morning due to a combination of the weight of heavy snow and
gusty winds knocking down trees and power lines.
Across elevations over 5,000 feet, especially east- and northeast-facing mountain slopes, snow totals will top out over 2 feet by early tonight. Some
locations in Idaho, such as Pine, had already received over 2 feet by Monday morning!
Snow has even piled up in the western Dakotas with higher elevations like Hill City, S.D., picking up 8 inches by Monday morning. Snow totals will
average 1 to 3 inches in
southwestern North Dakota and
northwestern South Dakota through tonight with higher amounts in the higher
elevations.
As the storm heads farther northeast across the Upper Midwest through Tuesday morning, snow will taper off.
The break from the snow will be very brief in many cases, however. An
arctic
front plunging southward from Canada will spread snow into
northwestern
Montana Tuesday night and back into
southern Montana and
northern Wyoming Wednesday into Thursday.
More waves of snow showers are expected to follow across the northern
Rockies through the end of the week and over the weekend. Snow will even
develop farther south across the High Plains over
western Nebraska and
southeastern Wyoming.
The first flakes of the season could even fly as far south as
Denver over the weekend as the coldest air of the season spills
southward. More information on how cold this air will be, especially for the northern
Rockies and High Plains, can be found in the
East Regional News story.
