Residents of the southern Plains, Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley fear that two storm systems may renew flooding late tonight into the upcoming week. Some of the storms may also become severe, producing threats like damaging winds and hail that could threaten to add to the trouble of people living in these areas.

Water levels are still at flood stage over some locations from East Texas to the lower Mississippi Valley, following very heavy rain and flooding that struck the region last Wednesday into Thursday.

The two rounds of rain and locally severe storms this week could cause a secondary rise and new flooding concerns along regional streams and rivers.

The first storm system will spread showers and storms into East Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley late today into Monday.

During the afternoon hours today, only spotty showers and storms will develop. By the evening and overnight hours, some storms across Oklahoma and north-central Texas will become more widespread.

A few isolated storms could become severe this evening, possibly threatening the Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Dallas metropolitan areas.

Damaging winds of 60 mph could down trees and cause power outages on top of the threat of blinding downpours and flash flooding. Brief hail is also possible with the strongest storms.

On Tuesday, the threat zone for drenching storms will be over East Texas into western Louisiana.

A second storm system may take shape over the southern Plains during the middle of next week.

This second storm could be the larger and more slow moving of the two features. Hence, it threatens to unleash more rain and thus cause more flooding impact than the first on a regional basis.

However, since more rain could fall from either of the two storms on a local basis, both systems bear close watching.
