A prolonged stretch of dry weather
will continue to grace the
Mississippi Valley through the weekend, giving
flooded rivers an opportunity to recede. There is concern that rain returns to the region early next week and renews flooding problems.
A large dome of
high pressure will remain in control of the weather
across the central and lower
Mississippi Valley today into weekend.
Sunshine will dominate and afternoon temperatures will warm pleasantly.
Tonight will be quite chilly with temperatures expected to drop into the 30s as far south as
Cape Girardeau, Mo., and
Fayetteville, Ark.
There continues to be indications that a tropical feature may bring rain back to the
Mississippi Valley early next week. The tropical disturbance is currently
located in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.
Even after numerous days of dry weather, several rivers from eastern Texas and Louisiana to Illinois are expected to still be above flood stage by
the time the tropical feature's rain arrives. The added rain could easily lead to new flooding problems.
The flooding that continues early this November follows an extremely wet October across the
Mississippi Valley. Many places received more than 300 percent of their
typical October rainfall.
Monroe, La., was one such location. The city was inundated by
20.54 inches of rain this past October. That was well above the 3.91 inches that typically falls.
