Rounds of torrential rain the last
few weeks have caused major flooding along rivers across the
Mississippi
Valley region with floodwaters covering roadways and entering homes in some areas.
Another potential episode of
heavy rain early next week could lead to
additional rises on rivers and threaten flooding in more communities.
The most recent of these rounds of
heavy rain hit the region late last week,
quickly sending water flowing over roadways and stranding motorists in areas from Louisiana to Missouri Thursday into Friday.
Runoff from this most recent storm is still leading to rises on some rivers from
eastern Texas and Louisiana to Illinois and Iowa this week. Many of these
rivers were already in flood stage before this latest storm hit.
Fortunately, dry weather through the end of this week will give most rivers a chance to crest and start receding slowly. However, if
heavy rain returns to the region early next week, as some computer models are
showing, the flooding could become much more serious.
Another
heavy rain event would trigger new rises on rivers. There is even
the possibility for rivers currently in moderate to major flood stage to rise to record levels.
All of this will depend on if and where
heavy rain sets up across the
midsection of the country early next week. Computer models seem to be in agreement that a
storm system will take shape east of the
Rockies to bring
heavy rain to parts of the Plains.
Some models even show some potential for a tropical feature to bring
heavy
rain to the western
Gulf Coast region late in the weekend. This
