The same storm that unleashed
flooding rain along the
Gulf Coast of Texas will move eastward through the Gulf of Mexico this
weekend. The
heavy rain and resultant flooding and travel delays will expand
across the remainder of the Gulf states this weekend.
From 2-4 inches of rainfall with local amounts up to 6 inches will deluge southern parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, as well as the
western Florida Panhandle today into tonight.
The heaviest rain will spread from
New Orleans, La., to
Mobile, Ala., and
Tallahassee, Fla., by the evening.
Flooding of small streams,
low-lying areas, city streets and even some highways will result
and can put people's lives at risk. Residents of the
Deep South are urged
not to drive through flooded roadways.
Runoff from the rain could worsen the flooding situation where rivers are running high from the rainfall of last month.
People who are traveling early for the
holidays this weekend may encounter slow traffic along parts of
I-10 and
I-20. Flight delays and cancellations are also possible.
Isolated amounts of 8-10 inches of rain swamped communities near the coast of Texas just north of
Corpus Christi.
After causing travel disruptions and flooding across the Gulf states, the storm will turn northward and move up the East Coast Sunday night into
Monday. The
East Regional News story has more details on the impacts
for the Eastern Seaboard.
