The same storm unloading heavy
snow on the
Rockies and soon-to-be High Plains, will swing northward late
in the week toward the
Great Lakes area.
A swath of heavy snow will continue to march north-northeastward from Colorado and
western Nebraska to the western and central parts of the Dakotas tonight into
Thursday.
The heaviest snow on the Plains will fall over the Nebraska Panhandle and western South Dakota. However, 6 to 12 inches of snow will fall as far
northeast as central North Dakota.
Away from the
Rockies, the snow will be more wet, rather than dry and
powdery. However,
gusty winds can still cause this snow to drift in the
vast, open areas of the Plains.
Wet snow can bring down some trees and power lines in the wooded areas around towns and cities from Scottsbluff, Neb., to
Rapid City and Spearfish, S.D.
Farther east, the storm is expected to bring areas of
windswept rain rather
than snow over the
Great Lakes region Thursday night into Friday.
The late-week rainstorm will follow light rain that is currently dampening the eastern Great Lakes.
Enough rain can fall to bring slow travel and flooding in
poor drainage areas to the major
Midwest cities of
Minneapolis,
Chicago,
Detroit,
St. Louis,
Indianapolis,
Cleveland and
Cincinnati.
The storm may also bring huge waves on the
Great Lakes, as well as lake
shore flooding where winds blow onshore.
