In the wake of the outbreak of tornadoes and damaging thunderstorms in the Midwest this past week, much quieter weather will aid in clean-up efforts through the rest of the weekend. Another round of strong storms will target the northern Plains by Monday.

The cold front that brought the onslaught of destructive storms Wednesday into Thursday exited into the East Friday. Cooler, drier air has since filtered into the Midwest behind the front.

High pressure will keep the Midwest dry with fairly cool temperatures in most places today. It will continue feeling more like mid-September in places like Chicago and Detroit.

For the residents of southern Minnesota, eastern Iowa, and central Illinois who are still cleaning up after Wednesday's violent storms, the comfortable, drier weather is much-welcomed this weekend. At least 30 tornadoes were reported in these areas Wednesday, and over a half dozen have been confirmed.

Several homes were destroyed, and many more homes and businesses were damaged. Central Illinois was one of the hardest-hit areas. In Minnesota, one of the confirmed tornadoes touched down in southern Minneapolis and came close to the downtown Convention Center.

While the Great Lakes region stays cool, the Plains will continue warming up through early next week. Temperatures will surge well into the 90s across much of western and central South Dakota and Nebraska today and Monday.

Yet another cold front will slice into this steamy air late today into Monday, sparking more storms over the Dakotas tonight and areas from northern Colorado to Minnesota Monday.

Some of the storms could be strong, producing damaging winds, hail and heavy rain.
