Heat Wins the Weekend
6/5/2008 2:11 PM
The heat that has been building out of the Southwest this week will move into the Northeast this weekend as low level cool air over New England and along the mid-Atlantic Coast finally gives way.

The rim of the expanding dome of heat and humidity has been the scene this week of the widespread severe weather outbreaks east of the Rockies. On Wednesday, there were more than 400 reports of severe weather, including 47 tornadoes, from Colorado to Virginia.

The Midwest Regional News story reports the widespread severe weather erupting across the Plains early this morning will shift to the Midwest today. The storms will be steered into Michigan and northern Ontario as the dome of heat builds into the lower Great Lakes.

A stubborn northeasterly flow from the Atlantic Ocean today will keep temperatures in New England in the 60s and 70s, while highs from Lake Erie to the Delmarva Peninsula climb into the 80s and 90s.

The cold front will break down this weekend, allowing the southwesterly flow to push into New England. High temperatures will reach the 80s, while the major urban areas along Interstate 95 will have temperatures soar into the 90s.

Humidity will add to the discomfort, leading to triple-digit RealFeel® temperatures. Heat advisories are in effect in New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania, including the greater Philadelphia area, and along the Eastern Seaboard from Virginia to the Carolinas.
