Searing Central Asia Heat
7/30/2008 1:47 PM
Wilting heat burned its way over the heart of Asia this early to reach its fiery crest Wednesday. In baking Uzbekistan, the city of Tashkent reached a sweltering 111 degrees Wednesday afternoon. Normal late-July temperature is 90 degrees. Farther north, sprawling Kazakhstan suffered widespread 100-degree heat. At Qyzylorda, the afternoon temperature neared 110 degrees and, factoring in the humidity, the apparent temperature reached nearly 120 degrees. In the southeast, Almaty, the former capital, heated to 100 degrees whereas at Astana, the new capital spread over the northern plains, 101 degrees was registered. The border with Siberian Russia did not hold back the hot blast. Slavgorod set a of 103 degrees versus a normal high of 80 degrees. Story by AccuWeather.com Senior Forecaster Jim Andrews
