Parts of southeastern China were hammered by record rainfall during June as the seasonal southwest monsoon was much more persistent than usual. The cloudbursts were punctuated by Tropical Storm Fengshen, which hit late the area in the month.
In Hong Kong, more rain fell during June than in any other month since record-keeping began in 1884. The rainfall tally for the month was 53 inches at the Hong Kong Observatory, surpassing the old record of 49 inches from May 1889.
Other parts of the Pearl River Delta, including the cities of Guangzhou and Macao, also established new records during June for highest monthly rainfall.
