Typhoon Fengshen Slams the Philippines
6/20/2008 10:59 AM

Typhoon Fengshen slammed into the Philippines Friday as it came ashore from the Philippine Sea. Fengshen made landfall on southern Samar Island with maximum sustained winds around 85 mph and gusts as high as 105 mph. Along with destructive winds, the typhoon unleashed torrential, flooding rainfall as it made its way west-northwestward across the archipelago.

As of Friday evening, local time, Typhoon Fengshen was over the central Philippines. Centered over Masbate Island and 250 miles to the southeast of Manila, Luzon Island, the typhoon wielded highest sustained winds of 90 mph; it was moving west-northwestward at 14 mph. Fengshen's forecast path is northwestward and northward over Luzon through the upcoming weekend, during which time it will unleash torrential, flooding rainfall even as the rugged island slowly weakens it. Indeed, the threat of deadly flash flooding and mudslides is quite high. Early next week, the storm should emerge over open seas to the north of the Philippines and could threaten Taiwan or Japan's Ryukyu Islands.
