A New Tropical Storm

The first tropical storm of a new season has taken shape near the southern Philippines as of Monday. Monday evening, local time, Tropical Storm 02W was over the western Sulu Sea near the island of Palawan, Philippines. At the time, the highest sustained winds were moderate at 40 mph as the storm headed towards the west at 15 mph. Downpours and squalls about TS 02W were striking Palawan at the time. High pressure deflecting steering winds made it likely that TS 02W would veer northward over the South China Sea while also strengthening. Threats to land included one to the eastern bulge of Vietnam as early as Thursday; another was to the island of Hainan late in the week.
