Searing heat burned many portions of eastern Mexico Thursday. Indeed, the temperature soared above 100 degrees F from parts of the northeastern state of Coahuila to the Yucatan Peninsula and other far southeastern states. It was hottest in eastern San Luis Potosi, where Tamuin rocketed to 115 degrees F and Rio Verde peaked at 106 F. To the north, a high of 109 degrees F was registered in the state of Tamaulipas at Soto La Marina. In the city of Monterrey, which is located in Nuevo Leon, the temperature spiked 23 degrees above average to hit 106 degrees F. Monclova, Coahuila set a high of 105 degrees F. On the Yucatan Peninsula, Progresso reached 104 degrees F. The fiery heat was fostered by a strong ridge in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere. Northwesterly winds behind a sharp cold front brought cooling to northeastern Mexico Friday, but another hot day was unfolding in the southeast.
