Coast Cools as Fires Burn
6/23/2008 9:53 AM
A cooling onshore flow will bring relief to the California coast, while heat and dry conditions inland keep the fire danger at an extreme level.

The Southwest Regional News story reports the blistering heat will spread from the Desert Southwest to Texas today, while an onshore flow begins to bring cooler marine air into the West Coast.

Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday reached 96 degrees, one degree shy of the daily high temperature record. By Wednesday, the high temperature will be 20 degrees cooler.

A number of daily temperature records in California were broken or tied on Sunday:
  • Beaumont: 105° (old record 101° in 1989)
  • Camp Coop: 104° (old record 102° in 1960)
  • Ramona: 103° (old record 99° in 1973)
  • Yorba Linda: 101° (old record 100° in 1973)
The hot, dry conditions in the central valley and the High Desert will continue through midweek. The addition of lightning from dry thunderstorms will keep the fire danger at an extreme level.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reports lightning strikes over the weekend sparked hundreds of small fires in northern California. Fires have burned homes and threatened vineyards in the Napa wine country.

Tuesday marks the one-year anniversary of the catastrophic Lake Tahoe wildfire, which destroyed 254 homes and caused $140 million in property damage.
