Change in the Northwest
6/12/2008 8:50 AM
Showers will continue over the Intermountain West today, while the positioning of the jet stream brings improved conditions to the Pacific Northwest.

The storm that pounded the mountains with heavy snow sparked a deadly outbreak of severe weather on the Plains on Wednesday night. Tornadoes are blamed for the deaths of at least six people, including four Boy Scouts at scout camp in western Iowa.

Snow continues to fall in the higher elevations today. The retreat of the jet stream today will allow warm air to flow into the Pacific Northwest. The increasing warmth will quickly melt the snow, creating the potential for flooding.

The Severe Weather Center lists the ">snow advisories and flood-related warnings across the Intermountain West.

Meanwhile triple-digit heat will build in the southern valleys and High Desert in California. The combination of the heat, dry air and sunshine will result in an elevated fire danger.

A marine layer through the weekend will moderate temperatures along much of the California Coast. The mornings will feature areas of low clouds and fog, while the afternoons become partly to mostly sunny.

The moist mornings on the coast could soften the greens at Torrey Pines in San Diego, easing the challenge at the U.S. Open Golf Championship which begins today.
