Tropical Texas Soaker
7/7/2008 8:38 AM
Tropical moisture pumping into the Texas Gulf Coast will continue to produce flooding rain today.

The Fourth of July weekend was a wet one along the Gulf Coast, and the rain will continue today. The heavy rain has sparked flash flooding across deep South Texas.

The rain since Friday in Brownsville, Texas, is 250 percent of the normal rainfall for the entire month of July, while McAllen, Texas, has recorded 150 percent of its normal amount for the month.

Rain totals in Texas over the 24-hour period ending this morning at 1 a.m. CDT include:
  • Brownsville: 4.18 inches
  • Port Isabel: 3.61 inches
  • Harlingen: 2.87 inches
  • Weslaco: 2.68 inches
  • Edinburg: 2.57 inches
While the heavy rain falls in South Texas, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop today over the Rockies and the rest of the Southwest. The stormy setup will continue through midweek, with drier weather forecast during the latter half of the week.

The West Regional News story reports extreme heat will build out of the southwest, spreading into the Pacific Northwest and onto the western Plains and the Front Range of the Rockies.
