Storm Sandwich
7/3/2008 8:36 AM
A corridor of dry, warm weather across the southern Plains today will be sandwiched between Gulf Coast storms and a line of thunderstorms igniting along a stalled cold front stretching from Missouri to the mid-Atlantic states.

The influx of tropical moisture and daytime heating continues to spark showers along the Texas Gulf Coast. The rain in South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley is helping to put a dent in the severe drought conditions in the region.

Meanwhile, thunderstorms will erupt along a cold front draped from the south-central Plains to the East today. The Midwest Regional News story reports the front will slow today as it moves through the Ohio Valley.

Hot, dry air pushing out of the south will spread to the east between the stormy areas. The heat is helping to fuel the wildfires burning in Arizona. The National Interagency Fire Center on Wednesday reported there were six active, large fires burning in the state. The most dangerous fire is the Lane 2 fire in the Prescott National Forest northwest of Black Canyon City.

The fire has burned 7,200 acres and is only five percent contained. Numerous structures, power lines, communication facilities and historic mining community of Crown King are threatened, and evacuations have been ordered.
