Storm Relief
5/16/2008 5:05 PM
A push of dry air from the Rockies will overwhelm Gulf of Mexico moisture into next week, marking an end to the rounds of severe storms plaguing much of the region since the start of spring.

The Severe Weather Center reports that the storm system that slammed Texas and the Deep South over the past two days reached the Southeast coast of the nation Friday evening. With the exception of spotty, heavy storms in areas that need the moisture along the Rio Grande River this weekend, most areas will be free of rain for days.

Thunderstorms over South Texas Friday morning erupted along the tail-end of a cold front, producing damaging winds, heavy rain and an isolated tornado.

An 86-mph wind gust was recorded before daybreak in Harlingen, Tex., while thunderstorm winds flipped a mobile home near Edinburg, Texas. The frontal boundary will slowly drift back and forth across the southern valley of Texas, prolonging the threat of thunderstorms through the weekend.

The West Regional News Story reports that high pressure causing record heat in the West will bring dry, warmer weather to the Plains and much of the Southwest.

Building warmth has now brought an end to winter in the Rockies. Several inches of snow fell in Colorado Wednesday night and Thursday morning. This weekend, temperatures in the mountains will soar into the 60s and 70s.

Melting snow will lead to high stream levels in the mountains and valleys below. Those with water interests are advised to use extra caution due to the rapid warm-up and sudden thaw.

The heat wave from the West will expand eastward through the Four Corners region into early next week, while temperatures on the Plains trend upward.
