Fay Florida Bound
8/16/2008 8:12 AM
Tropical Storm Fay is expected to be at hurricane strength before reaching the Florida Keys and South Florida early next week.

The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center reports that at 11 p.m. EDT, Fay was located about 100 miles north-northeast of Kingston, Jamaica, moving west near 14 mph. Maximum-sustained winds are at 45 mph with higher gusts.

Fay will continue tracking to the west before turning northwest and then north as it reacts to the ridge of high pressure building in the Southeast.

Fay is forecast to reach Category 1 hurricane strength by the time it moves over Cuba on Monday.

All interests in the Caribbean, Bahamas, Jamaica, the Florida Keys and South Florida should monitor Fay's movements through early next week for increased development and changes in its track.

While South Florida prepares for Fay, storms Sunday will continue in northern Florida and along the Gulf Coast. The showers have developed all week along a cold front that has been stalled across the Deep South for more than a week.

A few storms later Sunday will develop in southern Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. The storms will produce locally heavy rain and gusty winds. Elsewhere across the South, dry conditions continue, with no significant rainfall in sight unless Fay brings in a slug of moisture next week.

Temperatures this weekend will be near normal, without the humidity that will return to the South by next week.
