Coastal Storms, Interior Comfort
6/30/2008 1:49 PM
While strong, drenching storms will continue into the night along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, a push of dry air will invade interior locations during the next couple of days.

The Severe Weather Center reports a cold front tonight will continue to drift slowly to the south and east from Louisiana to northern Florida, northward to the Carolinas and the Northeast. Storms along the front could produce hail, damaging winds, and drenching downpours. One or two of the strongest storms could produce a tornado.

Deadly storms Sunday ripped through the Southeast. Associated Press reports a five-year-old was killed and 12 others were injured when strong winds blew over a row of tents at an air show in Huntsville, Ala.

A young boy was injured by a lightning strike near Madison, Fla., along Route 53 around noon, EDT, Monday. The boy was taken to the hospital, but he is expected to survive.

The storms have had a beneficial side, however. Portions of the region received over an inch of rain from early Sunday through the midday hours Monday:
  • Roanoke Rapids, N.C.: 2.18"
  • Ozark, Ala.: 1.76"
  • Chapel Hill, N.C.: 1.72"
  • Raleigh, N.C.: 1.30"
  • Valdosta, Ga.: 1.04"

Portions of western North Carolina, upstate South Carolina and northeastern Georgia remain in an extreme drought, despite recent rain.

While the front will make eastward progress through the coastal Carolinas later tonight, the system will stall over Florida and the immediate Gulf coast. As a result, the chance of pop-up, drenching thunderstorms will continue through the balance of the week.

A front approaching from the Northwest could cause thunderstorms to pulse inland over much of the region during the Independence Day Weekend. Meanwhile, persistent thunderstorms over the weekend in the western Gulf of Mexico will have to be watched for possible tropical development.

Most areas north of the Gulf Coast will experience relatively comfortable conditions into Wednesday morning due to the push of slightly cooler, less humid air. Humidity levels will slowly build later in the week and over the weekend.
