Mid-Atlantic Mess
4/21/2008 8:07 AM
A storm system lingering over the mid-Atlantic coast today will spread heavy rain over Virginia and North Carolina, while an onshore flow could spark localized flooding.

The storm system dumped several inches of rain from Pennsylvania to Virginia on Sunday, while sparking severe thunderstorms and reports of tornadoes from Maryland to North Carolina. The damp, dreary conditions will linger over the mid-Atlantic into Tuesday.

Sunday's storm produced record rain in Virginia, sending several waterways spilling over their banks. The flood threat continues today as an onshore flow around the high over Atlantic Canada helps to increase the rain amounts today. Some areas could receive an additional 3 inches or more on top of the rain recorded on Sunday:
  • Roanoke Rapids, N.C.: 3.54"
  • Hatteras, N.C.: 1.97"
  • Myrtle Beach, S.C.: 1.39"
  • Beaufort, N.C.: 0.98"
  • The Severe Weather Center lists the flash flood watches in effect in the mid-Atlantic region, as well as the fire weather warnings in effect in Florida.

The combination of warm air, low humidity and dry conditions will continue to keep the fire threat at an elevated level through Tuesday.

Meanwhile, spotty showers developing today over the lower Mississippi Valley will be followed on Tuesday and Wednesday by more widespread showers and thunderstorms as the storm system that produced a blizzard Sunday in Montana makes its way across the Plains.
