Warming Up
4/16/2008 3:06 PM
The chill has finally exited the South, replaced by warm, dry conditions that have increased the fire danger across the region.

The core of the cold that over the past couple of days produced record overnight low temperatures and low daytime highs as far south as Miami has been pushed out by a flow of warm air from the Southwest. A massive dome of high pressure has parked itself over the eastern half of the country, ensuring the rain-free weather will continue for at least a few days.

Low temperature records across the Deep South early Wednesday morning included:
  • Bristol, Tenn.: 27°( tied record from 1950)
  • Macon, Ga.: 33° (old: 34° from 1962)
  • Tallahassee, Fla.: 33° (old: 36° from 1943)
  • Apalachicola, Fla.: 39° (old: 42° from 2007)
Some of the higher elevations of the southern Appalachians could experience another frosty start to the day today. The Severe Weather Center lists the frost and freeze advisories in effect, as well as the fire weather warnings across the Southeast.

The increasing warmth, combined with dry conditions and low humidity, has heightened the fire danger from northern Georgia to south Florida.

The fire threat could ease by Friday. The Southwest Regional News story reports a storm moving through the Rockies early this morning is helping firefighters battling three wildfires in Colorado. The system later in the week could produce a few showers across the Southeast.
