Thunderstorms on the Move
8/5/2008 2:41 PM
Strong storms that slammed through the Chicagoland area on Monday night have moved into the Ohio Valley today. By Wednesday, the storms will steer into the mid-Atlantic region.

The Severe Weather Center reports the dangerous storms tonight will spread from western New York through the Ohio Valley into Missouri and Iowa. The strongest storms tonight will produce heavy rain, large hail and damaging winds.

The Severe Weather Center lists the flood-related watches and warnings in effect through tonight across the Midwest.

Storms today have toppled trees and power lines across Illinois and Indiana into Kentucky. On Monday night, the storms that tore through downtown Chicago and into Indiana were blamed for at least one death. Fans were evacuated from the stands at Wrigley Field, while travelers were evacuated from the upper levels of terminals and planes at O'Hare International Airport.

On Wednesday, the potential of strong storms will spread from the central Plains to the mid-Atlantic states. Expert Senior Meteorologist John Kocet says "this is an unusually large area of severe weather for August."

The East Regional News story reports the cool front that has sparked the storms by slicing into the heat spreading out of the Southwest has blocked the heat from spreading into the Northeast.

While the heat continues across the central Plains on Wednesday, a brief shot of cooler and drier air will spread across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest.
