Storms Continue, Heat Builds
7/31/2008 8:08 AM
Strong thunderstorms will move out of Manitoba and into the Upper Midwest today, while heat builds across the central Plains behind a storm system that soaked the Plains on Wednesday.

The Severe Weather Center reports the storms in the Upper Midwest will intensify later in the day after daytime heating adds to the instability in the atmosphere. The strongest storms will be capable of producing wind gusts in excess of 60 mph, torrential rain, large hail and the potential for tornado development.

Storm-related watches and warnings are in effect today across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest.

The South Regional News story reports the storm system that moved across the central Plains on Wednesday will move through the Tennessee Valley today.

Rain totals over the 24-hour period ending this morning at 1 a.m. CDT include:
  • Carbondale, Ill.: 3.23 inches
  • Warrenburg, Mo.: 2.29 inches
  • Joplin, Mo.: 2.06 inches
  • St. Louis, Mo.: 1.82 inches
  • Effingham, Ill.: 1.67 inches
The heat will surge across the Plains, reaching the Midwest by the weekend. The East Regional News story reports a dip in the jet stream will keep the heat out of the Northeast until early next week.

The pattern could bring the highest temperatures of the summer to a number of locations from the Midwest to the mid-Atlantic and New England.
