Relief
6/16/2008 8:00 AM
Cool, dry air diving across the Midwest today will bring relief to the flood-ravaged Midwest.

The East Regional News story reports that the cold front that produced the last round of severe storms on the Plains and Midwest moved into the East overnight. Strong storms will erupt late today from Kentucky to Maine.

The relief from the near constant parade of storms will allow the record-breaking flood waters to continue receding; however, flood-related watches and warnings are currently in effect across much of the Midwest.

The strong storms on Sunday caused one last shot of damage in the region, with unconfirmed funnel clouds reported in Indiana. In Iowa City, the Iowa River crested Sunday at 31.5 feet, flooding a dozen buildings on the campus of the University of Iowa and forcing hundreds of people to evacuate their homes.

A dip in the jet stream behind the cold front will usher in a shot of cooler air from western Canada. Temperatures through midweek will be 5 to 10 degrees below normal for mid-June.
