500-Year Flood
6/13/2008 8:06 AM
The storms that have sparked deadly tornadoes and record flooding have moved to the east today; however, flood waters across the heartland continue to rise.

The Severe Weather Center reports the front today will drift to the east and south. The threat of potentially damaging thunderstorms, flash flooding and tornadoes will stretch from the lower Great Lakes to southeastern Oklahoma.

Storm- and flood-related watches and warnings are in effect for much of the Upper Midwest and central Plains.

Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, Peoria and Grand Rapids are in the path of the potentially destructive morning storms, while potentially damaging storms later today could target Tulsa and Springfield.

Tornadoes this week have been blamed for six deaths, including four Boy Scouts at a camp in western Iowa and two people in northeastern Kansas. The rain has exacerbated flooding that began with the storms of a week ago.

Many rivers across the Plains and Midwest are at record flood stages. Officials say the Cedar River in Iowa is at a 500-year flood level. Virtually all of Cedar Falls, Iowa is under water. Widespread evacuation orders are in place, and flooding has closed miles of interstates, local roads and highways across the heartland.

The relief from the rain and tornadoes will be brief. A new storm system is forecast to reach the Midwest by Sunday, bringing more heavy rain that will continue into early next week.
