Severe Thunderstorms Invade East
8/10/2008 1:35 PM
Showers and severe thunderstorms invade most of the region today due to a cold front and low pressure moving in from southern Ontario. Below-normal temperatures will continue until Monday evening.

The South Regional News story reports a cold front has pushed all the way to the Gulf of Mexico this weekend. The unusual blast of cool air will continue to make it feel like autumn across much of the eastern half of the nation through early next week, especially across the Northeast.

On Saturday morning, low temperatures in the Northeast were below average for early August as they dropped into the 50s, which is typical mid-September.

Low temperatures on Sunday morning across the region included:
  • Bradford, Pa.: 56 degrees
  • Watkins Glen, N.Y.: 59 degrees
  • Rutland, Vt.: 54 degrees
  • Morgantown, W.Va.: 62 degrees
  • Charlottesville, Va.: 55 degrees
Severe weather is a threat today along the Interstate 95 corridor from the mid-Atlantic to New England. Storms will be in effect this afternoon and continue through the night. Storms could produce damaging winds, large hail and heavy downpours.

Flash flooding watches
are a possibility through Monday for areas from northern New York to Maine.

Wet and cooler weather will remain in some parts of the region on Monday, but warmer weather will begin to push its way back in by later in the week.
