Cool dry air has followed the storm system that moved through the East late on Tuesday, bringing more comfortable conditions to the region.

The line of storms on Tuesday sparked an outbreak of damaging winds and large hail from northern New England to northern Florida. The cold front producing the storms sliced into the record heat along the Eastern Seaboard, sparking the outbreak that snarled air, road and rail traffic on Tuesday night.

The cooler air behind the front today will push out the heat and humidity that has gripped the eastern third of the country since the weekend. Record temperatures set on Tuesday included:
  • NYC LaGuardia Airport: 100°/old record 95°in 1984
  • Concord, N.H.: 98°/old record 95° in 1959
  • Windsor Locks, Con.: 98°/old record 97°in 1974
  • Philadelphia, Pa.: 98°/old record 97°in 1964
  • Albany, N.Y.: 96°/old record 92°in 1974
  • NYC Central Park: 96°/old record 95°in 1984
High temperatures today in the major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor will be as much as 10 degrees cooler than today, while the decreased humidity will lower the discomfort level.

The South Regional News story reports that the combination today of the advancing cold front and onshore breezes will break the heat and humidity across the South. However, daytime heating could spark spotty late-day showers and thunderstorms.
