East Coast Storms
6/10/2008 7:39 AM
The severe weather threat today shifts east of the Appalachians, with strong late-day storms likely to erupt from New England to the mid-Atlantic.

The Severe Weather Center reports that the potent storms that caused widespread destruction in the Midwest moved over eastern Ontario overnight. By tonight, strong storms will produce more heavy rain, large hail and damaging winds.

The strongest storms tonight will spread through upstate New York to southeastern Pennsylvania, while thunderstorms will erupt from New England to the Carolinas.

The intense heat will continue today along the East Coast. The Severe Weather Center lists the heat advisories in effect along the East Coast from southern New England to North Carolina.

A number of daily temperature records fell on Monday, including:
  • NYC LaGuardia Airport: 99°/old record 95° in 1984
  • Atlantic City, N.J.: 98°/old record 96° in 1984
  • Syracuse, N.Y.: 95°/old record 94° in 2004
  • Islip, N.Y.: 95°/old record 90° in 1984
  • Erie, Pa.: 93°/old record 92° in 1964
By Wednesday, the storms will cut into the heat and humidity in the major urban areas along the Interstate 95 corridor, with highs returning closer to normal for early June.
