Often, but not all of the time , an -8133 error is related to a lack of memory somewhere, either associated with the application or in the output device itself. Here are some common suggestions for troubleshooting:
- How much memory do you have allocated to Quarkxpress® on the Mac? Increase it to at least 4,000 or more, if possible.
- Try resetting/rebooting the printer
- Try turning off background printing or any other spooler
- Try quitting any other open applications while printing
- With background printing/spooler on, try quitting Quarkxpress® once printing has begun
- With background printing on, try giving Print Monitor more memory
- Try printing fewer pages at a time; try printing one separation at a time
- Check for any complicated graphics, as a test suppress them; simplify them if possible
- Can the page be printed "rough"?
- Are any of the graphics PICT graphics, notorious for causing problems?
- Empty text and/or picture boxes can sometimes cause a problem. Try deleting these and printing again.
- Delete any/everything on the pasteboard and try printing.
- Delete any overset text
Note: Suppressing graphics is a good way to reduce the memory needed to print the page. However, this is rarely a solution to the client's problem, since they need all the graphics in their page. Some suggestions:
- If suppressing a graphic allows the page to print, the graphic in question may be bad. Open the graphic, select [or lasso] just the elements you need, copy, new document, paste, save as eps. By providing the client with a new eps file you may clear up their problem.
- Simplify graphics if possible. Open a graphic, select all, command I [in Adobe Illustrator®] and set the flatness higher. The flatness affects the look curves when set too high. Adobe recommends a setting of 4 for laserwriters, 7 or 8 for imagesetters and higher end printers. By raising the flatness, you make it easier to print.
- In Adobe Illustrator®, go to preferences, [command K], and turn split paths on, and set the resolution to 5080. This will break up complex curve paths into smaller pieces, easier for the printer to chew on.
- Delete any unused patterns or custom colors in Adobe Illustrator®. [Go to the Paint Menu, go to Custom Color... or Pattern..., hit Select all unused, and delete.]
Finally, printing from Quarkxpress® is a complicated procedure. You need to make sure that you have the appropriate setup to print your output device and make sure that the print dialog is configured properly.
