Downloading to a MAC via FTP
Using Fetch for MAC for Accessing AccuWeather Files

1. Your internet connection should be set up on a Macintosh computer

2. You should have the FTP software called FETCH
(If you do not have FETCH, it is recommend that you get it, because it is a very easy-to-use program for accessing FTP directories. It is available at the web site: www.dartmouth.edu in their software development/computer section. It is shareware, meaning you will be asked to register the software which costs between $25-$40. If you have questions or need assistance please call. You may also try getting FETCH from the shareware website: www.download.com)

3. Connect to the internet

4. Launch the FETCH application
    a. A window should automatically come up called New Connection... or go to File on menubar and pull down to New Connection...

    b. In New Connection... enter the following information in the slots:
    1. Host: ftp.accuweather.com
    2. User ID: xxxxx
    3. Password: xxxxx
    4. Directory: don't type anything.
    5. ( xxxxx = your 5-letter user ID and password assigned by our Systems Operations Department)
    c. Hit the OK button. A little dog will start running on your screen to indicate that it is "fetching" your file. This may take a couple of minutes.

    d. A directory will appear displaying up to 3 of the files shown below, where XXX= your 3-letter product code assigned by our Newspaper Graphics Department. Note: this code is different than your user ID/password.
    DEMO_XXX.mdr
    AMXXX.mdr
    PMXXX.mdr

5. To Download one file at a time:
    a. Click on the Binary button in the lower right corner of the window (not Automatic nor Text)

    b. Select(highlight) the file.

    c. Click on the Get File... button. A window will appear asking where you want the file to be saved as it downloads--choose Desktop for now. Click on Save button. This will take about 3 to15 minutes to download depending on the speed of your modem, i.e 14400, 28800, etc.

!!!! NOTE: while the file is downloading you will see two numbers in window. One number is the total bytes being downloaded; this will keep increasing until download is complete. The other number is the rate at which the file is downloading in bytes per second; this number fluctuates. If you see this number going down continuously, this means the connection is bad and you should stop and reconnect to the internet.

6. Your file should have an extension with .sea. or .sit after the file is downloaded to your desktop. SEA is a self-extracting Stuffit archive. Double-click on this file. Hit Continue button. SIT is a standard stuffit file, which can be opened using Stuffit, Unstuffit or Stuffit Expander. All 3 of these programs are available at: www.aladdinsys.com. Stuffit Expander is available for MAC and PC.

7. If your directory is empty, this most likely indicates that your file is not available. However, to double check that your directory is current, go to Directories on menu bar and pull down to Refresh File List.

8. If your access time deadline has passed and your file is not available please call 814-235-8650.
