Fresh arctic air will spread over the East today, leading to more lake-effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes. Record lows will be challenged across the South tonight.
A reinforcing shot of chilly air is pouring across the eastern half of the nation in the wake of a cold front.

The cold will keep high temperatures below freezing over the interior Northeast
and 10 to 20 degrees below normal across the South today.

The cold will once again help fuel bands of snow downwind of the Great Lakes. Numerous
lake-effect snow warnings and
advisories are in effect.
Through tonight, up to a foot of snow will add to amounts received prior to daybreak today to the lee of lakes Huron, Erie and Ontario. An additional 1 to 3 inches is expected to fall on Saturday.
The
Winter Weather Center states locally higher amounts are most likely to occur downwind of Lake Erie, in extreme northwestern
Pennsylvania and western New York. The orientation of the winds will allow moisture from both lakes Huron and Erie to be tapped.
Throughout the Great Lakes, the snow will make for treacherous travel into Saturday. Matters will be worsened by heavy squalls dangerously lowering visibility.
The
East Regional News story reports snow will not be limited to areas near the Great Lakes today.

Snow will accumulate over the central Appalachians as moisture is pushed up the western slopes of the mountains. An intense band of snow, totaling 1 to 3 inches by the afternoon, will make for a
slippery roads in and around Philadelphia.
Rain and wet snow will fall over the central East Coast today with a storm taking shape offshore. A coating to an inch of snow will be mainly confined to grassy surfaces over northeastern North
Carolina and southeastern Virginia this morning.

Anderson reports the storm will become powerful before slamming Atlantic Canada late tonight into Saturday.
Winds on the storm's back side will whip through the Northeast on Saturday, making for a bitterly cold start to the weekend.
The
South Regional News story states the cold will challenge record lows throughout the Southeast tonight.
Temperatures will drop into the 20s as far south as northern Florida and central Louisiana.
The
Severe Weather Center displays the freeze watches and warnings currently in effect.

The cold will ease some over most of the East on Sunday, but the moderation will be short-lived. Fresh cold air following a clipper may return to the region early next week.
The cold may linger over the Northeast on Wednesday, deemed the busiest travel day of the year. AAA estimates that roughly 41 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this
Thanksgiving, down 1.4 percent from last year.
A drop in the Thanksgiving holiday travel would be the first since 2002, and this year's fourth consecutive travel holiday with a decline from 2007.
The outlook for
Wednesday's travel calls for snow showers to potentially hinder travel throughout the interior Northeast. Heavier
snow could pose greater problems over northern Maine.
