Lake-Effect Snow, Southern Chill
Lake-effect snow will spread across the upper Great Lakes today before developing downwind of the lower Great Lakes by tonight as the cold air plunges as far south as northern Florida.

The East Regional News story reports that the arctic cold front will usher chilly air into the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and the South today. Gusty winds behind the front will create RealFeel® temperatures that will feel colder than the actual temperatures.

While winds today will be weaker than those that blasted the Midwest on Sunday, the cold air blowing across the warm water of the Great Lakes today will lead to the first significant lake-effect snow of the season in the upper Great Lakes.

The heaviest snow bands will be over northern Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and northwestern Lower Peninsula of Michigan today. The Winter Weather Center reports that up to 6 inches of snow will fall over some spots in the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin.

The Severe Weather Center lists the winter weather advisories and snow advisories in effect.

Rain will spread across the lower Great Lakes today, with a mix of rain and wet snow over the higher elevations of western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania. There could be heavy rain and thunderstorms downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, with the potential for waterspouts over the lower Great Lakes.

The cold air on Tuesday will reach the lower Great Lakes, with snow showers and squalls in places downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario producing 1 to 3 inches of snow. Higher amounts will be possible in higher elevations.

Some flurries will fall for the first time this season across central Pennsylvania, western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio on Tuesday, while cold air creeping down the Appalachians will bring snow showers to the mountains of North Carolina.

Strong winds whipping across the Great Lakes region will combine with the snow to create hazardous travel conditions. The FAA Flight Delay map will have the latest travel information for airline passengers.

By midweek, milder air will reach the Midwest, while the cold air remains over the Northeast. Lake-effect snow will continue to fall across upstate New York and the mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Snow will spread into the Poconos of eastern Pennsylvania on Wednesday.

The cold and blustery weather behind the cold front on Sunday morning created single-digit RealFeel® temperatures in the western Dakotas:
  • Rapid City, S.D.: 5 degrees
  • Williston, N.D.: 7 degrees
  • Grand Forks, N.D.: 9 degrees
  • Bismarck, N.D.: 11 degrees
The South Regional News story reports that the coldest air of the season and strong winds by Tuesday will bring a taste of winter to the Deep South.

A frost and freeze will develop tonight in the interior Southeast and northern parts of the Gulf Coast states, with the potential for patchy frost forming as far south as northern Florida.

Meanwhile, a coastal low will develop along the mid-Atlantic coast on Tuesday. The system will quickly gather strength, becoming a nor'easter that will slam New England with strong winds, rain and snow in the mountains.

Expert Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson says, "There could be blizzard conditions, with wet snow and strong winds, by Tuesday night in the Green and White mountains."

The dip in the jet stream will retreat from the Northeast late in the week, bringing an end to the wintry weather as dry, mild air surges into the region on Thursday and Friday.
