Gulf Coast Residents Threatened by Hurricane Ida Early in the Week

Ida strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane Saturday night. Its winds are only 5 mph short of a Category 2 storm, and may strengthen into a Category 2 storm for a time today. It is brushing east Cancun, Mexico, and impacting western Cuba today. Ida will then push into the southern Gulf of Mexico into tonight. As Ida races to the north, likely as a Category 1 storm, on Monday, the storm's rain, winds, and waves will threaten lives and property along the Gulf coast from southeastern Louisiana to the Florida panhandle.
