Winds, Dust Blast the West

As the latest in a series of Pacific storms pushed inland over the West, the circulation around the feature brought high winds to multiple locations from California to Oregon Thursday into
Friday.
In the high country, winds were accompanied by heavy snow and whiteout conditions.
East of the Sierra, the strong winds lowered visibility to near zero at times in western Nevada.
The winds were strong enough to down trees and large tree limbs.
Here is a look at some of the peak wind observations through mid-afternoon Friday, PST:

- Reno, Nev.: 77 mph
- Walker Lake, Nev.: 72 mph
- Silver Lake, Ore.: 70 mph
- Cedarville, Calif.: 62 mph
- Burney, Calif.: 60 mph
- Klamath Falls, Ore.: 55 mph
- Tennant, Calif.: 55 mph

National Summary
A storm that produced a quick, drenching rain in the Northeast
Thursday into Thursday night was exiting Maine Friday. Meanwhile,
much heavier rain was still falling over central and coastal Texas.
Over 10 inches of rain fell on Rockport, Texas, since Thursday
evening. Incidents of street and stream flooding are numerous from
San Antonio to Corpus Christi as a result. The heavy rain was heading
for southern Louisiana Friday evening. Farther west, the latest storm
in the series was blasting onshore along the Pacific coast. Drenching
rain was falling at low elevations with snow over some of the passes
much of the high country in the Cascades and northern Sierra. The
storm has had a history of damaging wind gusts from Washington and
Oregon to Nevada. Gusty winds in Nevada Friday were causing areas of
blowing dust and very low visibility.

--Strong winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Kate affected Florida
spanning Nov. 19 to 21, 1985. Wind gusts of 100 mph were felt at Cape
San Blas with gusts of 78 mph on Miami Beach and 70 mph at Key West.
Nearly 6 inches of rain fell on Panama City. In Tallahassee, 90
percent of the residents was affected by flooding and power outages.
A storm surge of 10 feet occurred along the Florida Panhandle. Kate
cause severe damage in Apalachicola Bay, where only two months
earlier, Hurricane Elena had hit.
