Cold air is manufactured over the frozen snowfields of central and northern
Canada. At these latitudes, there is little or no sunlight this time of year,
and there is far more outgoing than incoming heat energy. As a result, the air
becomes increasingly cold with temperatures falling well below zero. A large
north to south amplification of the jet stream is what brings the cold air
southward into the United States.
In the weeks ahead, the attacks of cold air from arctic regions will become
increasingly brutal. The cold that will invade the United States next week is a
mere chip off the iceberg compared to what lies ahead.
