High surf will roll ashore beaches from northern North Carolina to southern
Maine early in the week. Through Tuesday, a lengthy fetch of easterly winds
over the open Atlantic Ocean will drive high waves. It is these that will crash
ashore on mid-Atlantic and New England strands, some of which were badly eroded
by earlier storms.
On Monday, surf will be roughest from Virginia to Long Island and southeastern
Massachusetts. On Tuesday, high surf will build northward into Maine while at
the same time relenting in Virginia.
High surf will cause some renewed erosion of mid-Atlantic beaches, which
damaged state will leave them vulnerable to further damage. And the long fetch
of easterly wind will cause tides to run somewhat higher than usual. Minor
tidal flooding will be possible near the usual time of high tide.
