Jim was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania, on October 23, 1964. He moved with his family, which includes two older brothers and his twin sister, to Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania, where he grew up and graduated with honors from Wyoming Valley Area High School in 1982.
Jim enrolled at the Pennsylvania State University and graduated in 1986 with a B.S. in meteorology. While in college, Jim spent five semesters with the Penn State Campus Weather Service and won a Meteorology 411 forecasting contest. He is currently a member of the American Meteorological Society and the Association of American Weather Observers.
Jim became captivated by the weather after watching TV weathermen as a child and still enjoys forecasting snowstorms more than anything else. He fulfilled a childhood dream in 1987, when he began working at AccuWeather, the world's largest commercial weather organization. Since he began his employment, Jim has garnered many awards: the 1991 Annual Outstanding Progress in Forecasting Award, the 1993 Annual Outstanding Progress in Broadcasting Award and several Forecaster of the Month awards. He was promoted to Senior Forecaster in 1994.
An avid sports fan, Jim follows the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs religiously. He enjoys playing softball and racquetball, and his golf game is reportedly improving every day. Jim's competitive spirit was quite evident at one of the 1994 AccuWeather parties when he out-hustled his co-workers to win the Annual AccuWeather Pool Tournament.
Jim also appreciates film and music with his tastes leaning towards classic rock and heavy metal music. Caddyshack and Monty Python's Holy Grail rank among his personal movie favorites.
