Upper-Level Low Forms in the Plains; Snow and Storms

A STRONG UPPER-LEVEL LOW WILL BRING SNOW AND SEVERE STORMS TO THE PLAINS. NEXT EVENT: HEAVY RAINS IN THE EAST FOLLOWED BY A MASSIVE COLD WAVE WITH SNOW SQUALLS THIS WEEKEND.

Big changes are going to occur in the weather pattern over the next 5-7 days, and some dramatic weather may occur as well. Let me go through the points.

1. The upper-level low coming through the Rockies will initiate severe storm development in the area shown on the map below. Dew points are coming up into the 50s and temperatures should get into the 70s. The result will be severe storms with wind damage and hail over 1 inch developing later this afternoon and lasting through the night. We should see a squall line developing by Wednesday morning that will continue to move east Wednesday afternoon as shown on the map.

2. Low pressure that is developing near the Yucatan will be drawn north Friday into Saturday across the eastern part of the country. That low will be of tropical origin and combine the tropical moisture with an upper-level low. The result will be locally heavy rain from Florida north to Pennsylvania. Some places may pick up 1-4 inches of rain out of this tropical low as it tracks north.

3. The most interesting weather event will occur Sunday as a strong jet dives across the Great Lakes and brings a massive cold wave to the Great Lakes and Northeast. The cold front associated with that jet could have thunderstorms with rain and even a change to snow. I can see 1-3 inches of snow across parts of Michigan, eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and western New York as the air dynamically cools down to freezing, changing rain showers over to snow showers. The aspect of this front will be the high winds associated with the passage. I can see wind gusts up to 70 mph from Minnesota all the way to New York and Pennsylvania. It is also possible that winds gust over 50 mph all the way into the I-95 corridor Sunday night as the front plows on through.
