Rainfall will seem almost unending for flood-ravaged England this week. Rain
continued to fall through the day Sunday. Now, rain will fall often and at
times heavily over a wide area during Tuesday and Wednesday owing to yet
another big storm.
Rainfall of 1-3 inches will soak wide areas of northern England, Scotland,
Wales and Ireland this week. Amounts will be higher locally. The area set to
get more soaking rain includes Cumbria County, England, where the flooding has
been the worst.
An all-time record rainfall for England occurred in Cumbria County this past
week. At Seathwaite, in the heart of the Lake District, more than a foot of
rain -- 12.4 inches -- fell in just 24 hours. The old record for 24 hours had
been a fall of 11 inches at Martinstown, Dorset, a record set back in July,
1955.
Further rain has fallen across the flooded areas since the record-setting
cloudburst.
Flood waters swept through the cities of Cockermouth and Workington. A police
officer was killed trying to direct traffic away from a bridge in Workington
when it collapsed. He is being hailed a hero.
